Are you ever too old to trick-or-treat?

Written by Wendy Simms

As a kid, my Dad used to love taking the kids out trick-or-treating. He would plan his costume well in advance and take us and our friends around the neighborhood trick-or-treating. Now, he wasn’t trick-or-treating for candy, he’d walk around to our neighbors houses with an empty glass trick-or-treating for drinks. In today’s society, that may be frowned upon and he may be pegged as a poor role model, but he was just a fun-loving guy making the most of Halloween.

As the mother of a 14-year-old son, my husband and I debate at what point he should stop trick-or-treating. Is it only for the very young or the young at heart? He enjoys going out with his friends, and yes, getting candy. It’s harmless fun. And, now that I’m not “allowed” to walk around with him anymore, I enjoy walking around with my neighbors and their younger kids. There is something about the crisp, cool Autumn air, spending time with friends and the neighborhood kids running from door to door that I always look forward to. I say, let them trick-or-treat as long as they want to. Encourage their enjoyment of the little things in life. They’ll grow up soon enough.
